Touya's eyes are red-rimmed with spent tears, hands twisting his ever-present tailored white handkerchief. His hands, those hands that delicately set down stones on a goban time after time, shake with suppressed fear and perhaps, Sai guesses, a little bit of guilt.

Hikaru is unconscious; he has been since his head cracked sickeningly against the concrete sidewalk in the blistering July air. It was clearly an accident; he must have been taken off guard by Akira's shove, lost his balance and fallen, head meeting ground in a whirl of colour and pain. The predatory, frustrated look in Akira's eyes that had snapped when Hikaru pushed him away and laughed at his shy, childish confessions had faded instantly, replaced with concern and fear and a silent sort of scream.

Sai does not understand what the men in white coats are saying - all he knows is that he's been searching for the yellow light he first burning behind Hikaru's unassuming gaze all those months ago. And it is gone. The air hums with tension - no one knows what will happen now.

He gazes down at the unconscious boy who has let him occupy his mind for the past three years, making him privy to his innermost thoughts and dreams. Hikaru trusts him. They've shared a mind for months; he's watched Hikaru grow, watched puberty take it's course in the form of nonsensical, sharply colored dreams of girls (and sometimes a certain violet-haired boy) in the dark night. Dreams that make Sai blush and work out new Go strategies in his head as he tries to ignore them -while he had wisely refrained from telling the boy that while he couldn’t directly influence Hikaru’s mind, Sai couldn’t help but see what went on inside of it, even when he didn’t want to.

Hikaru has his own way of coping with those mornings - he laughs, a little too loudly and quickly, and he doesn't talk to Sai as often as usual. He tries to convince himself that Sai saw nothing. For his part, Sai can do nothing but play along.

But when Touya Akira takes over Hikaru's dreams in a way that makes Sai bitterly jealous of the young boy lying in bed, able to smile in his sleep as dreams overpower him - dreams denied to a long-dead ghost.

Hikaru is always surlier than usual those mornings, yelling at Akari and forgetting things at home. Often the mood lasts for days, and Sai knows they're both denying things to themselves. Hikaru, is of course, trying to understand thing that are happening to him that aren't supposed to happen to teenage boys. Sai is trying to forget that he doesn't try quite as hard to ignore those dreams as he should.

It isn't Sai's business if Hikaru wants to spend the rest of his life regretting everything - hiding from the dreams that lurk just beyond the realm of the comfortable. But - he bites his lip and lets his eyes flutter shut as he hears Akira sob something faintly like Hikaru's name behind him -

It isn't fair that he hasn't thought of Akira as a rival since he met him almost a year ago. It isn't fair that he's haunted, even as a ghost himself, by violet eyes and damningly sweet smiles of a child born a millennium too late for even the most fleeting ironic hope to take wing. And yet...

Sai knows better, but he's not sure he cares.

He slips into Hikaru's body, taking over mind and flesh, letting each muscle bend to his will. He opens his (Hikaru's, his conscience whispers) eyes.

And even if he knows better, the relief he sees in Akira's violet eyes as he (Hikaru) sits up is enough convince him that he should ignore those thoughts.

This is worth it, he thinks silently, as Akira sobs with joy and throws himself into his arms, claiming his/Hikaru's lips in a rather wet and desperate kiss. Just once, just this once, that’s all...
