Just curious

What do people mean when they do an lj-cut and they say it's a "fake cut"?

I have the impression that it means "this looks like I've put stuff under an LJ cut, but in fact this is a link that will take you to another entry in my LJ or another LJ I have." In which case, it's just a link rather than a cut, but it's usually an internal link (i.e., to something else that belongs to that person, like if the person is posting in a community, it might link you to their own LJ).

Of course, I could be totally wrong.

Well, if you're wrong, then I am too, because that's also how I take it.

LOL! I could totally hear the Matt LeBlanc!

I'm pretty good -- another exam in the morning, ARGH. But this one won't be anywhere near as deathly as last week's, so I'm pretty lucid at the mo'. :)

Fake cuts are usually used in communities when the poster wants to link back to their own journal, instead of just lj-cutting a post in that community journal.

Thanks for the info. That's what I thought, however, people in a BBM community were acting so apologetic about it ("behind my very fake cut - sorry!", etc.), that I thought I might be missing something.

Haha, it's almost a given that a comment like that is put alongside the fake cut. It's like saying "Oo you shouldn't have!" when someone gives you a gift.
