So. If you've read the Hikaru no Go scanlations, you may remember that the quality of scans for the entire last three volumes were... pretty... bad. Which is a major pity, because the last three volumes are when Obata's art gets REALLY SMOKIN' HOT. And I'm all "screw that, no crappy scans are going to stop me from making icons of HOT WAYA" and ho! ( Read more... )

You might like it now but in two months you might spot a mistake on your icon that will bug you for the rest of eternity. And you don't want to go back and fix that on the actual icon itself, 'cause it's tiny and not layered and you'll lose quality etc.

SUCH WISDOM. Hahahah, I had to learn that the painful way, orz.

OH DON'T WORRY, ME TOO XD. G-god I hate it when I spot mistakes on my cleaned icons that I didn't save original versions of. It makes me wryyyyyyyyyy inside 8(.

Almost all of my icons now are completely redrawn, I don't even clean them, really, I don't know how. I like doing it because I find it relaxing, but I hate that they always turn out significantly lighter than the originals and no matter what I do, I can never get the line thickness correct. Your way is 110% better, and now I know what I'm going to be puttering with tomorrow when I get up. And thank you especially for the screentoning bit; my one foray into that on my own was a total disaster.

Question, though! What do you do about backgrounds like shrubbery, etc? Take them out, try to clean them..?

Ah, really? I'm really glad you found it helpful, then ^^! Heh, have fun!

As for backgrounds, it usually depends on how complicated they are. I'm lucky, since HikaGo is mostly all drawn indoors, that the backgrounds are never that complicated. Usually I'll just use my own judgement on that. If I think it's too distracting or complicated, I'll just erase it right out. If I think I can replicate it without much difficulty, then I'll do the same thing with the background as I did with the character, though usually on a different layer again in case I screw it up xD.

Ever try using the burn tool? Set it to around 50%, midtones, and go over blacks or just darken screentones. You can even use it to help even out dark skintones, and it's a lot less work than using a black brush for everything. It gets me this:

Huh! That's pretty neato, actually! I hadn't thought about doing it that way |D. I'll have to try it sometime >D. Though yeah, when it comes to tones, I refuse to use the clone tool 'cause the scans are too grainy and yuck xD. I'm ... maybe a little anal-retentive ahaha.

I've considered completely re-toning Ticky's skin sometimes. Like in the above icon, it tends to get a little grainy. But then I'm like "eh, Ryuuken gives me pretty scan when she can and I just remake them anyway" \o/

But yah, burn tool is your god. cause you don't have to worry about going over the whites, the only real danger is going over screentones which is generally waaaay less of a concern. I was thinking of doing a guide about that at one point. But eh.

Hahaha yeah, I'm probably going to buy the last three volumes of the HnG manga and go scan it all PANEL BY PANEL, but for now this'll have to do xD.

WOOT, ANAL RETENTIVE ICONERS UNIIIIIIIIIITE \o/.
