It's a good look into one possibility of House's state of mind. I found it particularly adept how you wove the idea, from House's POV, that he is without real control of the situation. The problem is that he doesn't fit in, that he is outside, and he can't do anything about that. I don't believe that in reality (if a tv show can be counted as reality) but think that you captured a fundamental flaw of House's thinking that leads to much pain.
I also agree with your insinuated interpretation that this began in his childhood. While being put outside is not his fault (but rather awful parenting) it probably started a cycle of disassociating himself and seeing himself as eventually incompatible from others, that would later cause problems.
Thanks for commenting, barefootpuddles. I'm sure you're right that House's self-analysis is not nearly as rational as he thinks it is. Same for all of us I suppose!
And the circularity. the going back all th way to childhood was very powerful - and of course Cuddy had once sent him to find a sandwich in an empty house on a cold Thanksgiving night.
I live in a Thanksgiving-free world, but I'm curious: what do you guys feel when the date comes, and you feel not thankful at all? I'm on the outside (of the US) looking inside, but I have no desire to get in :).
I wasn't thinking of that lyric as it happens; though it's certainly appropriate.
When you mentioned Cuddy sending House on the wild goose chase, I almost kicked myself as that was one of the images that came to me before writing-then it melted away and I didn't use it!
Like you damigella, my world is Thanksgiving-free as I'm a citizen of the nation rebelled against :), and also like you, much as I admire many aspects of the US, I'm happy to be outside!
An interesting way of tying all those incidents together, and I think House does see himself as an outsider and isolated most of the time, whether placed there by his own choice or by others. Very nicely done.
Thank you, menolly_au. Yes, it's an interesting question, how much his isolation is self-imposed. Let's hope we get some more peeks inside his thought processes this season.
