“No room” he said, prepared to shut the door again. “I believe that’s the correct seasonal response.”

His mother moved her foot smartly, wedging it against the frame.

“You’re not the Innkeeper,” she said. “I believe you’re Joseph in this particular scenario.”

Taking advantage of her son’s momentary blankness, she wrested the door from his grasp and pushing her way past him, made way for a familiar but long-absent figure to follow.

Dominika.

“Hello Greg,” she said.

“What the ?”

“This young woman,” said Blythe sternly, “claims to be your wife. She also says she’s not seen you in fifteen months. You can understand why I am a little confused." She indicated Dominika’s belly, close to full term, he thought.

“Nothing to do with me.”

“I told your mother it was not yours; that we’d never slept together. I’m not sure if she believed me.”

“Mom has an interesting take on paternity; I’ll explain it to you sometime.”

“But you are married?”

“Green card; yes. Does that count?”

“A marriage is a marriage; of course it counts. I suppose this was to spite Lisa. Oh Gregory.”

“Excuse my curiosity, but how come you two know one another?”

“I travel round, Greg; that much you know about me. When I get to Lexington I work for a short time in the golf club. I hear the name “Mrs House”, which is not so usual and I looked it up and see that her husband was a Colonel House. I am not stupid. So I introduce myself, and here I am.”

“So why are you here?”

“You have a responsibility..”

"I’m dammned if I do!”

“…to see that Dominika and her child get proper medical care” continued Blythe, smoothly.” You have insurance; she is your wife.”

House stared at his mother and then at Dominika. He sighed.

“That’s as far as it’s going”, he said. “I’m not in the market for raising another man’s child.”

“Of course not.” Blythe simply smiled. She wondered if history could be made to repeat itself.
