Oh thank you! I was hoping someone would provide a (somewhat) positive future for House after Wilson's death. I like your House's reaction to the actual death, understated but sincere. His words to the nurse 'I hope so' when she said he was a good friend were very touching. And his calm and rational approach to a new identity where very IC I think.

Love this line - The problem with taking a fish out of water is that it doesn’t cease to be a fish . House can try and make a new start but he can't deny his essential nature. I like that it takes him time to realise this (and oh dear, working as a janitor again). It was interesting that the writers put in that bit about House revealing the truth to Foreman, possibly to keep a door open for him?

Very nicely done, does give one some hope for the future.

"House can try and make a new start but he can't deny his essential nature." Yes; that's what I was going with. It's Shore's canon too. I think the writers delivered their usual ambiguity very successfully in the finale. We can all believe what we choose to believe. I choose to believe that House is such an extraordinary physician that eventually he will be needed somewhere by someone and his manifold offences and mess-ups will be excused, even if he has to serve time again!

Thank you very much for commenting . Hope the weather Down Under is more seasonal than here!

Thanks, readingrat.I tried to imagine a somewhat subdued House, through grief at the loss of his friend and the need to strip himself of all the intellectual authority which he carried around with him. Whether time will heal him and his natural mischief resurface if he reassumes his real identity, who knows?

(Here via damigella_314's mention of it in comments to her recent story)

I absolutely love House choosing "James" as his new first name. The "Good Will Hunting" future for House that he soon realises isn't enough for him is intriguing, and his last moments with Wilson very poignant.

I thought every time House had to give his name, or someone called him by it, it seemed a reminder to the world that Wilson once lived.
Thank you for reading and commenting.

I find this utterly believable. House has always seemed too ... too basically honest, or too much himself, to stay on the run forever. He came back and faced punishment after the crash, and I think he'd eventually do the same here.

My only question is whether this is Part One of something that has a Part Two.

I'm glad it seemed believable to you. House told Foreman he would face the music eventually and I thought he was sincere.

As for a second part; it's not planned. Much depends on whether I can find an even remotely plausible way of getting him out of his present situation.

Many thanks for your kind comments.
