Losing the mystique of two digits

In addition to my thought that signing Pedro Martinez is an incredibly bad decision by the Phillies, I'm sad for another odd reason: he's going to lose at least one game this season.

Right now, his career record is 214-99. Even if he's terrible this season, he'll still have an impressive career record. But it won't look so amazing, with three ( Read more... )

Yeah, and there's no way he'll make it to a really impressive number of losses. One of my favorite baseball statistics is that there are only two members of the 300 losses club. One of them is Cy Young, who is also the sole member of the 500 wins club. (The other is Pud Galvin, who was the founding member of the 300 wins club.)

You don't stick around long enough to rack up losses unless you're also racking up wins.
