Joker's Last Laugh

May 10, 2006 04:04

April first. April Fool's Day. The Joker. Chemical manufacturing. Large crowds of people. The Mayor and guests. It all equals bad news. Surveillance of the Gotham City Convention Center has gained them nothing. Activity from the exterior has already either happened or will not happen. Time to shift their focus to the interior ( Read more... )

After firing a line towards the appropriate building, I heard Bruce's instructions and nodded in agreement. The security office was a good place to start the search. Most likely, Joker would've planted some agents there, disguised as a few security guards.

"In and out?" I asked calmly, my voice a light whisper while my thoughts were reminded of the incident back at "The Last Laugh."

With Joker on the rampage, there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that Jason would show up here.

He offers a single nod. There's no need to remind them that the safety of the guests is their highest priority. Find and neutralize the gas. Remove Joker... and Jason... from the premises.

He brings up the rear as they enter. Nightwing first, Robin second...

If this gas Batman talked about was released, Joker would be able to gas the entire crowd of partygoers inside the Center. Quite the April Fools' prank, in his opinion. Meaning the safety of the guests was our highest priority. Make sure the gas ends up inert, or unable to be used by Joker, then get Joker-and Jason-out.

Turning on my night vision from within my mask, and noting that Nightwing and Batman both did likewise, the three of us made our way inside the Center-Nightwing first, me second and Batman bringing up the rear...

They don't have far to go in the dark before they reach a lit corridor. The security office is located in a corner of the building, away from casual access. With the possible exception of miscellaneous staff coming and going, they should go unnoticed.

Sounds of light conversation drift out through the half open window above the door.

"Think we'll see 'um?"

The second individuals response is laughter. "Of course we're gunna see 'um! Boss said they wouldn't miss the chance! Never gunna think to look for us up here though."

He looks to Robin and palms a knock-out capsule from his belt. They move simultaneously.

The Gotham City Convention Center. A significant number of people dressed up, and ready to dance the night away...before dying at the hands of the Joker. Not on my watch, and not on Bruce's watch either.

Though, my attire for the event wasn't the usual Red Hood guise, nor was it the Robin suit that I'd used when I encountered Tim back in San Francisco.

"I'm sure you'll all get a kick out of what you see me wearing...especially you, Bruce."

A dark grin was seen on my face as I entered the Center from the rear view, seen by hardly anyone at all...

"Oh I just LOVE wild goose chases!!! Wait 'til they 'turn the tables'!"

He steeples his fingers and erupts into a fit of cackling.

The canisters have been safely disposed of. There's been no other signs of Jason or the Joker. They're here though... waiting for the right moment. He has no doubt.

The banquet hall is crawling with people. They're finding seats. Checking out the dance floor. Looking over the buffet table. Waiters are beginning to circle with champagne. The band is taking the opportunity to check their equipment. The Mayor will take the podium in less than five minutes.

Their time is almost up.

Having made my way back with Nightwing to where we'd gotten into the ducts to begin with, we had rejoined Batman and were watching the final preparations before this little get-together started. The catering staff was ensuring that everyone got their food in a timely fashion; one could even assume that Alfred had infiltrated the staff just to watch over us. Though, he'd never do anything like that.

I spun one of my gas pellets on my finger, impatient and eager for anything to happen.

Like the dynamic duo, Nightwing watched the hall start to fill up with people. His arms were loosely crossed over his chest, eyes slightly narrowed, scanning the people wandering around. Two psychos in one night was not a good mix-- especially not in a banquet hall full of people.

Not like it was really good anywhere, anyway... he looked calm and collected on the outside. Yet, like Robin, the suspence was killing him on the inside.

Hopefully, that would stay a metaphor, too.

The doors suddenly closed abruptly as soon as the last stream of guests made their way inside the banquet hall a few minutes later. My eyes narrowed with suspicion and caution as the Mayor approached the podium, got ready to speak...

...and, instead of hearing the voice of our illustrious Mayor, the speakers emitted a booming sound of laughter!

"I wonder how long this Mayor'll last." I whispered to Nightwing while looking to my far right, and saw one of the most strangest sights ever imagined: The Joker, his arms stretched out to resemble a bat, with a searchlight hitting him from the outside.

"Jason'll make his appearance within the next three minutes, if not sooner." I thought, putting the gas pellet away and pulling out my staff. I had a feeling it would be needed.
