Yes! Recs from the library/school, NZ lit requirements for a literacy award in primary and then reading logs in high school. Tessa Duder mostly and one she cowrote with some guy, I also have whatsherface McNaughton (I'm friends with her daughter). I like reading young adult lit and fantasy but we don't seem to have much of the latter. $20NZD tops because I'm a cheapskate; while I like the idea of eBooking it there frankly aren't enough books I like in eBook format nor access here (things like how the Kindle can download books wirelessly if you're in the US but here you have to load it from a computer) for me to get a reader.
Also, I just pimped this out on three social networks :)
Non-NZ (Australian, but living overseas for the past few years): I can't think of any kiwi authors whose books I've read, though it's likely that I have read stuff by them and just didn't bother looking up their nationality. I'd be happy to read books by NZ authors, but it's unlikely I would seek them out specifically (unless a specific book or author was recommended to me). I'd probably pay the usual amount books cost. Preferably around $20-30 Australian dollars, but it depends on the book.
NZ: Have you ever read a book by an NZ author? Yes. Why/why not? Because I am an English major and a teacher, so it kind of becomes mandatory. Because we have some fantastic writers. Because it is pleasant to be able to read about situations and experiences that reflect my own. Who? So many. I have studied Margaret Mahy and Maurice Gee in depth. I am big Fleur Beale fan. I enjoy Emma Neale, Emily Perkins, Lloyd Jones, CK Stead, Kate di Goldi and Witi Ihimaera. I also enjoy New Zealand poetry, such as Karlo Mila Glenn Colquhoun and Jenny Bornholdt. How did you hear about it/them? Recommendations. Bookshops. What would you want to read? I enjoy reading young adult literature and contemporary female writers, in particularly. How much would you pay? I pay between $20-30 for a novel, depending on how much I want it. This doesn't change from New Zealand to overseas books. How would you want to access it? I am opposed to ebooks and like using bookshops.
