Ruby could tell he wasn't okay. She knew him long enough for that. When he leaned into her, she slid one arm around his neck, before pressing a kiss to the side of his head.

"It'll work out, Sam. It won't be easy, but it'll work out."

John noticed Sam and Ruby right away. That sort of embrace and leaning, that was the support between husband and wife. He knew that and missed it sometimes too. He felt bad he was going to ruin that with this painful conversation.

He glanced at Dean for a second before speaking up. "I didn't know."

Sam would want to hear that right away, he thought. It was certainly what he would have wanted to hear if things were switched around.

That type of comfort from Ruby had helped Sam through a lot of things over teh last decade and a half. But now it was gentler and not meant to get him through a bad day, but instead to just be a comforting shoulder to cling to.

When Dean and John appeared, he looked at them wearily, then nodded. "So I can scratch being pissed off at Dad off my list of things to do this week..." he offered as a way to break the tension.

Ruby glanced over at them before pulling away from Sam slowly. "I'll let you boys talk. I'm inside if you need me."

Once she was gone, Dean moved closer to his brother, moving to take Ruby's empty seat. "This isn't looking good, Sam."
