Sharon looked up, eyes widening in surprise at the expression on John's face. He was tense, that much was obvious, she just couldn't gauge how upset he was.

"What happened?" she asked, crossing the room to take Cori from him.

He didn't speak again until the baby was safely in Sharon's arms. After giving Hera's hair a quick ruffle, John turned his back to her, not wanting her to see his face. Kids picked up on stuff quick as lightning and he didn't want Hera to associate Sam's return with being something bad. It wasn't. The news he brought with him, though, was.

"Sam's back. Just popped right in while Dean and I were watching the baby." He paused for a moment, and then exhaled slowly before continuing, "It's not good, Sharon."

Sharon's mouth parted before she had a chance to speak. "Oh frak, is he okay?" she asked, checking John for signs of blood. There wasn't any, but it was the first thing her mind went to, Sam had showed up hurt. Maybe dying, or dead. "Oh, John..."

"He's not hurt." John turned his head this way and that, an automatic response as Sharon moved in closer. He didn't have any blood on him, nor did Sam, but in a way he still felt dirty, like there should have been blood on his hands because somehow this was his fault. He hadn't trained the boys well enough, hadn't taught them everything he should have. John didn't believe in predetermination; Dean and Sam weren't meant to play out something that had been scripted before their births.

This should have been avoidable.

"What does your God tell you about the end of the world?" he asked, chin dropping to his chest for a moment as he exhaled long and slow and steady.
