Brr? I wrote 2000+ words, and that's all you have to say?
Heh, yeah, this one does sort of leave you speechless. When I read it at Twilight Tales, one of the critique judges was Robert Weinberg. His comment:
"Wait, this was a STORY?! I thought when Bush got elected, this really did happen!"
Unfortunately, my tape ran out right then. I really wish it would've continued, because he opened up a real can of worms with that comment, and didn't write anything on my paperwork. :(
If you read the redux, it still sends a chill, I suppose, but it has a happier ending... sort of. Still chilling though.

Honestly? I thought the second version was even more disturbing -- repo-ing the kidney was bad enough, repo-ing the education / mind was worse, and repo-ing the heart and soul and personality wigged me out completely.
I'd make the analogy to the movie version of Hair vs. the play (SPOILERS) -- in the one, a character held to his principles and was killed; in the other, he was brainwashed into killing others. I found the latter considerably more upsetting.
