One of our priests (the young to-die-for-good-looking-ain't-it-a-shame one) had attended the seminary in Rome and was stationed at the bascilica. He served mass once for the Pope as an altar server for the feast of St. Peter and Paul. He told personal stories with such joy and enthusiasm, he lit up the whole congregation. It was so nice to hear someone who had personally met him and whose life he touched.
I was young when I first saw him in 1979 when he came out to Chicago. However, my hubby and I had audiences with him twice. The first time when we went to Rome for our honeymoon. We never got to shake his hand or talk to him but the second time, we were very close to where he was. My mother was confirmed by him when he was still Cardinal Wojtyla, Archbishop of Krakow. My late uncle who was a priest met him several times and always said what a wonderful, funny and down-to-earth person he was. He is so missed.
