I don't have brand loyalty per se, but I do have quality standards. Generally I'm a huge cheapskate but when it comes to TP, there's a point it just gets uncomfortable. I usually steer clear of the cheapest generic thing on the shelf.
The method I use for wiping is dictated by the mess. Different strategies work better for different things. And that's all I'm going to say about that.
I put "basic double ply" for toilet paper, but that's my way of saying I don't splurge but I don't totally cheap out, either. Generally I go for double-ply over single but what matters most is the quality of the paper, that it's not rough or going to shred and get wadded up in tiny balls in awkward places. For example, if there's a brand that's a good dollar cheaper than the next cheapest brand, I've learned to STAY THE HECK AWAY.
I have considered taking my own toilet paper to work, because their stuff is double-ply but rough and adversely affects my bum. I don't have the same trouble at home.
