Modern Sexism

So I was reading this online article sent to me by someone else as I normally do when it came to my attention that in Wisconsin (A state which evidently punishes single mothers) has struck another blow against women. Basically Rep. Don Pridemore (according to this article) has stated that instead of a woman divorcing her abusive husband she should ( Read more... )

You say you won't judge. I sure as fuck will though, for anyone who answers anything other than "wherever she wants to be".

Yeah, I would agree this poll does actually have a "right answer." Any one of these choices may be right for an individual woman, but it's not a one-size-fits-all, nor should it be up to "society" to override the woman herself.

I agree with both of you, but if I didn't include all forms of inquiry it would seem leading. You are right that society should not override the woman herself. However there are clearly men in power who think so. The friend that sent me the link has alerted me to another link saying that the single parent penalties in Wisconsin is for single mothers only in the wording. Single fathers aren't directly affected due to lack of them and the fact that the Rep believes that the biological father has a more important role in the child's psychological development and that parents should be the biological parents only. With things like this in place, I have to ask, if only to reach a sense of understanding of the world I live in and provide the hope that maybe posting about it on a forum will provoke thought to change crap like this. That may just be idealism though.

I'm totally fine with women doing whatever makes them happy, but what really bothers me is when people look down on me for wanting to be a homemaker. Everyone can make their own choice but mine is apparently the "wrong one" in this day and age.

I think there's merit in being a homemaker if the person doing it really wants to (eta: in other words, isn't being forced to by an oppressive husband or something). Especially if kids are involved--I think stay at home moms are great because kids really benefit from spending that much time with their parents when they're young.

that's part of the reason i'm so interested in the idea. i spent so much time in daycare when i was little and so little time with my parents, as an adult i wish i had spent more time with them because i think that would really make our current relationship a lot more positive.

My own mother worked and raised us. She got off work in time to meet us at home after school. She wanted to be a good mom and all. I think the stress of both was a lot but I admire her and other mothers for making those choices.

make having miscarriages a criminal offense alina13 March 27 2012, 23:22:14 UTC
how would they prove criminal intent?
how would they even prove a woman indeed had a miscarriage, if sometimes it goes unnoticed? I wouldn't be surprised if I had one, for example. if the term of pregnancy is, like, really (I mean, really) early, it may happen (I know 2 girls that had that).
there are too many things to consider before putting a woman into jail for having a miscarriage.
and what happened to that proposal?

I'm just curious. never heard of anything like it.

and yes, I did mark the option before last. some find themselves best in the kitchen, some tend to be career builders, and some are very fulfilled through their kids. and who are we to bend them over backwards?

Right now miscarriage is being "criminalized" mostly by manipulating existing laws meant to protect pregnant women from third-party violence (eg: woman is punched in the stomach and loses baby; she can press charges) against the women themselves, though there are some "personhood amendments" suggested some states as well. A couple cases I've seen in which the mother has been charged with killing her own fetus include Bei Bei Shuai in Indiana (attempted suicide by poison while pregnant; she survived and the fetus did not) and Rennie Gibbs in Mississippi (she used cocaine during her pregnancy, which may or may not have caused the miscarriage).

At this point they seem to be going after women they can charge with other things (drug possession, etc) at the same time and I haven't heard of a woman randomly pulled in for questioning solely for having had a miscarriage, but it sets a dangerous precedent. Bei Bei Shaui's case in particular is disturbing as had she gotten a legal abortion and then attempted suicide, no law could touch her, as ( ... )

Yikes. Well at least in Georgia it was denied. That's nuts.

We really, really need to get old white guys who don't understand the female reproductive system out of the legislature. Seriously, I believe anyone who wants to legislate reproductive health should have to pass a test to prove they understand how it works.

Amen! I've said in several places Santorum = Pope. His thinking is about as far forward.

LOVE the guinea pig. I miss being able to own them. I'm allergic to poplar pollen, and aspen chips are the best bedding for guinea pigs.

Thanks about the pig! But you can actually own one without using that kind of bedding! :O I use fleece bedding for mine, which is reusable so it's cheaper, better for the environment, and doesn't cause allergies. If you have questions about it you can PM me or you should join guinea_pigs and ask there. :)
