my definition of a real mountain or a real river (same definition for either) is:

If you are experienced, prepared, and careful going into it and it can still kill you *anyway*.

Hence, Rio Grande = stream (no really, in Albuquerque in MAY, I could WADE across it). Columbia = river.

Olympics = mountains. Saddlebacks = hills.

Snow helps with the "these are mountains" definition but it is not a requirement.
