So here is my idea for changes to the LIMS system for Round 7:
The Short:
If someone is voted off (gets the lowest number of votes) during a round, and that person still has an unused skip, instead of being eliminated, their skip is automatically used up and they're still in the competition.
In other words, skips would be able to be used for both skipping a round and avoiding elimination.
In other words, this would make the LIMS into a double-elimination tournament (triple-elimination for those who get an extra bye through promotions), where you are eliminated once when you skip or get voted lowest.
The Long:
I've been thinking about this for a while because I always worry about getting eliminated on a round when I still have a bye. It seems like a waste of a skip.
There are also several other benefits to this new system:
* No one gets eliminated on the first round! (It's always a bummer when that happens.)
* This would allow people to get some constructive feedback that they can put to use in the next challenge, instead of getting feedback and not being able to participate again.
* Since skips and eliminations are basically the same thing, if a significant number of people skip a round, then that means less people (no people?) would be eliminated via voting since there would already be a lot of people being eliminated (by skipping).
* Related to that, I wouldn't have to worry about when it's fair to let people use their skips. Skips will be able to be used at *any* time up until when they're not applicable: the final round. This is because it will now be "safer" to submit an icon rather than skip (since skipping will now be more like getting eliminated by default).
All skips will be reduced to 0 when the number of participants left becomes six or less, as before (meaning: skips can't be used to prevent elimination as it gets late in the round).
* I hope this new rule would also encourage people to be experimental and to try their hand at each challenge (with the exception of the odd week when they are too busy, out of town, etc.).
Any thoughts, positive or negative regarding this new system? I will take into account any feedback I get when deciding on how Round 7 will go. Thanks!
