Running, Jumping, Climbing Trees

First off I want to say that I just published something at work that contains a very sly and clever Thomas Pynchon reference (if I do say so myself) and that's all I can say about it, though if I am allowed to I want to put it on my friggin' résumé in years to come, I'm so pleased with myself. Somehow the boss didn't notice despite being a lit nerd ( Read more... )

DOESN'T IT, THOUGH. I enjoyed the hell out of torturing my body the last two Days Of Rest.

I think in June you and I may be in the same city for a brief time window again, but we shall make no promises about what to do with that information.

I was indeed reading and going OH MY GOD WHY DID WE NOT DO THIS. If you're game for doing it again, though, I will totally come back so that we can do that. I will make time to permit it on a Sunday. Can I bring a friend? I will vouch for her awesomeness and well-behavedness.

Congrats on the 10K! That's excellent.

Thank you! I hope B2B goes well for you in SF. I have discovered that "may the ground rise to meet your feet" is more of a curse than a blessing when it translates into "may there be many hills en route when you are out running."

I am not sure whether I'm game for it again, primarily because it's ohmygod a lot of money. In fact I had to borrow it from Quinn and I'll be paying it back to her over the next few paychecks. But it is worth coming back to Puerto Rico for! And even if I don't go (it is indeed tempting), your friend is most welcome, particularly if she is not a complainer. (We had a couple of those on the trip. To be fair, the ads don't quite prepare you for what you're getting yourself into, but still, dude, put up, shut up, and spelunk.)

Hahaha, yeah. The good thing about most of the hiking that I do is that the sucky hard "up" part is all first, when you're fresh, and then the more relaxing "down" part is just kind of waiting for you afterwards. Canyons and caves suck for having the opposite effect. Running, it depends on the course. I really should get out there and have a go at the Druid Hills course this weekend.

Can you link me? Do they have a website? How much is ohmygod a lot of money?

The website is linked in the post ("caving adventure"). Annoyingly, I can't link directly to the caving part, but if you follow the "Adventure Tours" link at the top, that'll take you to a page with price info and with a further link to "Caving."

Oh, wow, that trip sounds all kinds of awesome. I'd still love to come out there at some point, BTW; I'm hoping to have more time to travel freely soon.

It is SO much easier to get here from NYC than Seattle.

Duly noted. :-) I'm hoping to spend at least half of the next 6-9 months traveling.

If the sly reference involved the phrase "Rich Chocolaty Goodness", you just went up another two or three notches in my esteem. (Actually any reference to Pynchon's first three novels would be worth a notch!)

Since I've started running I've been reluctant to listen to tunes while I do. For one I don't own a running-friendly iPod, but I'm also worried that I'll associate a particular song with running, so when I hear that song later I'll have some sort of Pavlovian, gasping-for-air response. What kind of tunes do you listen to during the run?

I'm thinking a visit to PR, maybe early next year (heat + me = bad), is in order. Sunshine and rum will combat the PacNW blues.

Next time you're near PDX, we can do a few running courses I've plotted out. We're about the same speed, too. Bonus.

Sunshine and rum we got in spades, year round. Just name the date and you've got a place to stay. Bring your special lady friend ( ... )

After reading this I had Kashmir stuck in my head during the run today. Interestingly enough, I was dead on a 10:00/mile pace.

In that vein, have you considered "Killing Jah" from The Kleptones' "Downtime?" Can't go wrong with Siouxsie mashed up with dub-heavy beats. "Paradise Circus" from Massive Attack's new album also might be good, too.

Also, I totally recognize where that Handsome Boy Modeling School track came from. :)
