The lazy. I mean, why do you need to go all the way to the water, when the sweet concrete below gets the job done ten minutes faster with less effort.

Then why not wander into traffic in Oakland and save the busfare?

Because being hit by a bus leaves too much to chance. And it sounds hideously painful. If you are out to commit suicide for ending your life's sake, you want a sense of finality that when you make the choice, you get it right. Jumping off a tall bridge always works, in reference to getting hit by a bus, losing a leg and making it harder to finish yourself off.

Another question: what's so great about lampposts 68 & 69? How come they have the most suicides on each side?

Okay, that's two questions. But still.

I think because there is a subset of people who think it is cool to die at "69". Also, it appears to be near the middle, which adds to the allure of the theatrical suicide.

A lot of people jump off near the ends not realizing that they won't be able to clear the concrete and hit the water.
