The conversation between Faith and I trickled out after a while, and we sat in what was surprisingly comfortable silence.
A car pulled up outside the house. Faith was on her feet before I could move. Good reflexes! A guy in his early twenties got out, followed by a teenage girl. She was surely too young to be Buffy.
"Were we expecting company?" the guy said, staring at Faith. The atmosphere was suddenly a whole lot cooler. I hung back, waiting to see what Faith would do.
Dude. Of all the people to come home first, it had to be Xander and Dawn. Well, on second thought, would've sucked more if it'd been Willow. Might've had some kind of epic battle right here in the front yard, what with her never trusting me and being all uber-powerful now.
"Hey Xand. Hey D. Sorry to just, y'know, drop myself on your doorstep, but it seemed like the place to be."
Never mind that the Council wanted me here. Might as well make them a little nervous. Oh wait, except I wanted to actually work WITH them this time. Crap, I keep forgetting that.
"Where are your manners, guys? In front of company and everything," I gestured towards Becca. "Becca, Xander and Dawn. And vice versa. Slayerette, meet the male sidekick and the little sister. B's, I mean."
There was a definite edge to Faith's voice when she introduced me. I guess there was some history between these guys. Considering she's apparently been a homicidal maniac, I could understand that.
I smiled weakly at Xander and Dawn. "H-hi." I stuffed my hands in my pockets, feeling awkward. "I'm Becca." I realised Faith had just said this and felt stupid. "I, um, I was hoping to see Buffy. About some demons that have been, er, trying to kill me." I hoped I didn't smell too bad. Sleeping in cheap motels with broken showers doesn't do much for the old personal hygiene.
I looked at them both. Out of everybody I wanted to see today, Faith was so not it.
"Well," I started, "I guess we all go in, and wait for B..uffy to get back." I smiled at Becca, "Nice to meet you, and welcome to Sunnydale. Things try to kill us all the time here. Oh, and I'm not so much a side-kick as a companion. Who fixes things."
I turned and looked at Dawn for help, for I was now in the land of the babbling.
