The case had been hard on all of them, and it would continue to become harder with each passing day. That's the way it was with any case, but this case was really testing them. A marine, no more than twenty years of age, found murdered, his limbs removed from his body along with his eyes. The limbs would be recovered later in a barrel full of a substance that had stripped the bones completely, the skin floating half dissolved in the top of the barrel. The suspect profile had been less than sufficient. White male, twenty to forty years old, with anger issues stemming from childhood. It was a carbon copy of every other profile. The team were discouraged, yet they would not give up.

The suspects so far had been less than co-operative, and the evidence was limited. Of course, the navy was full of young males with anger issues. Yet this was not the first time they had been up against such odds. No, it happened regularly, and that was just how it was. Abby was working hard down in forensics, but the evidence just wasn't speaking too her, whomever had committed the crime had no past record, and no fingerprints on file. In that the most promising suspects in the case had no criminal records of any kind, nor any harsh words spoken about them.

It was a dead end, and the 48 hour deadline was fast approaching. They needed a new strategy. Gibbs announced it the next morning, Tony was to go undercover. Of course Tony would not have been Gibb's first choice, but women were not allowed to join the navy, and McGee wouldn't cut it. No, it would have to be Tony. He suited up, and shipped out that day after a short course in what he would need to know about the navy to fit in. Kate was troubled by the assignment, they had next to no leads, and the person responsible was dangerous, and if his crime was any indication he delighted in the pain and suffering of others. Ducky had discovered not long before Tony shipped out, that the victim's extremities had been removed premortem, meaning the victim was still alive at the time of the act.

Kate had a bad feeling about Tony's assignment, but she did not question Gibb's judgment. She trusted him, and she always had, but she also took the opportunity to speak with Abby about her feelings. “I don't feel right about this,” she had opened.

“Hi Kate!” Abby exclaimed, as she pushed a button and the centrifuge in her lab began to whirl.

“Abby,” Kate said, moving into the lab.

“What's wrong, you sound down. What don't you feel right about?”

“It's Tony, going on this assignment. I just...” She struggled for the words, “I don't know, something just doesn't feel right.”

“So talk to Gibbs about it.” Abby suggested.

“No, I...I trust him, I do, I just...I don't know why I'm getting this bad feeling.”

“Your a woman, and women should always truth their instincts.”

Kate knew she was right, and so she decided to speak to Gibbs about it. However, her talk with Gibbs had been less than productive. He stated that he couldn't just hang the entire investigation on her unjustified bad feeling. Kate knew he had a point, but she still couldn't shake it.

Tony was scheduled to ship out in a few hours, and so Kate decided what she must do.

An hour before his departure Tony discovered a note on his desk, without any markings what so ever, none to identify the giver or the receiver. The fact that it was on his desk, however, suggested it was for him. Everyone had gone home for the day, and he was to meet Gibbs at the docks in less than an hour. He opened it,

“Be careful, please.” Was all it said. It was signed with nothing but a kiss. He smiled in spite of himself, he knew Kate had a soft side in her. He rationalized that it had to have been from Kate as the only females that knew of his assignment were Kate and Abby, and it just wasn't Abby's style.

Tony placed the note in his bag to take with him to the ship, and walked out the doors to meet his fate.
