songfic10 It was below freezing. It was dark at three o’clock in the afternoon. The gun in his hand felt like it might burn though his fingers at any moment, and its weight burdened him like death. Yet he kept walking, because he had too, because he had no other choice. If he stopped now, they would win. After all this time, after all the orders he took, after all the lies he was told. The men who had controlled him had placed him in terminal danger countless times, and Alex didn’t know who or what had protected him, or if something even had. Perhaps he was holding a ticking time bomb, one that was just waiting to go off.
Alex would no longer take orders from the men without faces, never again would he take orders from anyone at all. He did only what he wanted to now, only what he needed to do. Alex had lived like this since the day he had almost been killed. However, that was not unusual. What had really pushed him over the edge, what had really made him run, was something that was far deeper, far more painful. It had been a shocking wake up call, but Alex had needed it. She was dead. It had been quick and painless, but not for Alex. That’s why he had to keep going, that’s why he was on this mission, and that was why he had finally stopped talking the bullshit of the faceless and spineless men above him. Alex lived by his own rules now; he made his own, and changed the ones he didn’t like.
It was working for him so far, in fact, he only had one problem. It was rather large. The FBI, the CIA, the KGB, and the secret organization that he once belonged too but knew nothing about, were all looking for him. He had been able to evade the CIA, the FBI and even the KGB so far, but there was one organization he just couldn’t out run, and that was his own. The organization he had once belonged too, had once taken orders from, was now his enemy, and unfortunately these people weren’t the kind you wanted to make your enemy. They knew every step he took, every plane he boarded, and every friend he visited. In Prague, he had almost had to give himself up after his friends life was jeopardized by his actions. He never visited any of his friends again after that day.
You are what you are in this world, and Alex was a wanted man. He had been framed, framed for the death of his beloved. Now he was out to get revenge against the man that really killed her. The man who showed her no mercy, the man who showed no sign of regret for his crime, or countless others he committed over his life. No one knew this mans name, no one wanted to know it, not even Alex. He was known by only one name, and it wasn’t his own, The Cigarette Smoking Man.
It would be a long walk to freedom, and he knew it.
