Listen to your mother when she tells you to slow down. You're a bit of a pushy know-it-all, did you know? It doesn't really change as the years go by. Don't be too hard on Bruce when he tells on you for pushing him into the mud. Be slower to anger and quicker to understand.
That last part is important. Especially the understanding. Because Bruce will go away for a very, very long time and the boy you've always known will be gone.
You'll always miss the boy who never returned. But learn to discover and have faith in the man that did.
You become a lawyer. A good one, an honest one. It's a dangerous job and you'll frighten your mother with your decision but it is one you never regret. You'll wield what you believe is the strongest weapon and you will find what you do is so rewarding that the risks won't matter.
Somewhere along the way you'll meet a wonderful man named Robin Rice who inspires you with his passion. You need to let go of the past so you can fully give your heart to him, to this man who will challenge you and drive you and make you believe again.
For Chicago and what was at stake, you made the only choice your beliefs and love for it allowed.
You'd have done it all over again if given the chance because it was worth all the while. If it ended too soon, it ended with what you believed in. Your eyes were never closed and your heart and hands were open.
That's more than many can say.
It was a good life, kid.
Love always,
Rachel
