When I saw Phantom about 20 years ago, me and my best friend ate at Mama Leone's around the corner. It was good and there was a strolling accordion player. Don't know if it is still around though.
Go to Esca, on the corner of Ninth Avenue and 43rd St (i.e., right next to the theatre district). The chef, Dave Pasternack, is an absolute master and genius with fish. Plus, due to co-owner Mario Batali's influence, the place has pasta that is absolutely heavenly. I was a regular there for several years, and now frequently regret not being able to go there as frequently any more.
I was almost going to go there for dinner with my officemate tomorrow night, but decided to go to Union Square Cafe instead -- only because I've never been to Union Square (which focuses on seasonal, local food) during the summer. It was a very, very difficult decision, though (and I might still try to get to Esca for lunch, since it's restaurant week and the lunches are *cheap*).
The other restaurants I'd recommend aren't near the theatre district, so I'm not even going to tempt you. ;)
Lucky Cheng's is a chinese food & drag cabaret place where my sister had her bachelorette party. I don't remember how close to Broadway it is, but I thought you could get some spontaneous larping enjoyment by pretending to be very lost.:)
