I have my 360 since X-mas. I like it a lot...a lot more than my Wii that's collecting dust. I am also on Xbox Live. If you can find the specials, you can buy a 13 month subscription for $29.99. That's like $2.50/mo. The best thing about live is the downloadable content, online play, and the ability to stream Netflix movies.
Yes, it has no trouble acting like a media server, but it depends on how you want to hook it up to a router. You can use a normal Cat 5 cable, if you don't mind a wired setup. If you want to go wireless, you have to buy a wireless adapter, and it either has to be a wireless bridge or the MS XBOX 360 adapter (~$99). One of the advantages the PS3 has over the XBOX 360 is that it already comes with a built in wireless adapter

it sounds like you'll be leaning towards the 360. I'm partial to that system. it has a lot you can do with it and the newer models let you format the system to your preference. though building your own system wouldn't be bad either. It'll probably be cheaper. You just won't have games. I've read more negative critics of the PS3 than positive ones. BluRay has it's perks, but once a cheaper, better media format comes out, I think BluRay will be a thing of the past like mini disks. Forbes even put BluRay in the top 10 worst technology of 2008 list.
