Jus' got back from finally FINALLY catching a Dizzee show in Ottawa (Ottawa? Ottawa!) since he wasn't stopping in MTL or Toronto on his co-headlining tour with El-P. Damn
( Read more... )
Left it recorded and played back (a la backing vocals for pop stars, duh). He had a hype man, though and they threw lines back and forth once in a while. I didn't matter though, because the crowd knew all the words to the singles (or at least to the choruses) so the male-female back and forth was fairly well covered.
I still would have liked a BIT more off of the first album, but that's mainly because Maths + English is still a little naff to my ears. It's not that the tracks don't work, because they do, but the scattershot sonic palette detracts from the unity of the album and taking away the trad grime sounds dial down the energy significantly. Dizzee at his best feels like an all night rave.
More importantly, I was all the way up front and REGARDLESS the sound was clearer than ANY hip-hop show I've been to. I'm not sure if this is because Dizzee is a particularly clear enunciator or just had a better sound set-up.

Is there a way to track down who the engineers were? Is Capital Music Hall always this good? Sound quality is so important but only nerds and experts ever talk about it.
No. I was surprised because (although I've never been to Capital Music Hall before) the people I met there indicated that usually the acoustics are fairly shitty, and the design/space/shape of the building/room would bolster those claims. Also, normally at hip-hop shows, the closer up front you are, the bassier and louder things are, sacrificing clarity. I dunno. It was odd.
Apologies in advance for the irrelevance of this.pakabooriMay 14 2008, 00:33:32 UTC
I'm having trouble restraining myself from greeting your icon with "OH HAI!" (telling you this is not the same as actually greeting your icon). It's been a long time since I've seen it, you know, so it feels like an unexpected encounter with an old friend. And I totally greet all my old friends with lolspeak, whether or not the encounter is unexpected.
