My aim/intention for 2016 is to visit at least one new museum each month, and go to at least one special exhibition a month. Mainly born out of the fact that I started well in January as far as those aims go ;)
Sadly it will take more travelling (most of the local museum are closing so :()
January
Museums:
Museum of London - never been before, got to do the whole museum!
British Museum - revisit, to go to a few of the special exhibitions
Exhibitions:
The Crime Museum Uncovered - at the Museum of London, exhibition of select items from the MET's Black Museum (or museum of crime). Also attended the special 'Curating the Crime Museum Uncovered' evening talk and private view. Brought the exhibition book and another book on the Balck Museum - got an answer to why some victims not named from the curator, was interesting, though a lot of it was stuff that already has a lot of exposure.
Celts: Art and Identity - at the British Museum, exhibition of celtic art and giving a broad overview of who the Celts were/are. So many pretty things, but it was disappointing. They had some of the stuff from a bunch of Arras Burials (which they never mentioned - not even in the exhibition book :() and the pretty reconstructed chariot. It feel into a lot of the stereotypes as far as Celts go, and didn't really have any depth. But I got to see pretty metalwork. Brought some postcards, and the mini highlights book, decided against the main book, because it didn't provide the depth lacking in the exhibition. They didn't really deal with Pict and Arras as the seperate not quite Celt aspect, just lumped it all together. They mentioned Pict, but absolutely no mention of Arras, despite upwards of 20 Arras finds on display. Interesting in the 'how Celt & Celt art has evolved into the present'.
Egypt: Faith After the Pharoahs, Hoards and Scanning Sobek All three at the British Museum - was disappointed by the Faith after the Pharoahs exhibition (smaller but so much more packed people wise than Celts) it was interesting, but limited. Sobek = tiny little exhibit by the main doors, alllll the baby crocodiles, was interesting. Hoards = hidden away in tiny alcove by the money room, interesting, but not as well put together. Lots of pretty things.
February
Museums:
Manchester Museum - never been before, wandered the whole museum. Not sure? I expected more, was disappointed by tiny archery bit and the massive spaces filled with pointless snippets. Item heavy with little information.
Exhibitions:
Gift for the Gods - Animal Mummies Uncovered At Manchester Museum, the main reason for the visit. It was small and interesting, but not as much as I expected. There were some fun educational bits (best thing was the old sarcastic comic strip of the ghost cats), but not a lot to it.
