Even if they wanted to, wouldn't it be a lot harder? Did I read right that your amendments have to be approved by two consecutive sessions of the legislature? Because that's awesome.
When I heard that the original ruling was being challenged I was mind-boggled. I went to the state constitution online and looked at the really unambiguous Article 1 Section 6 that we have in these parts, and there is just no room around our equal protection clause. I just thought, "on what grounds can you even appeal that?" And of course the State Supreme Court essentially said the same thing by ruling unanimously against the ban. Awesome

There are certainly those corners of Iowa that are causes for worry; I'm sanguine because I'm from a pretty regularly blue county (as rural and small-town as it is). But the fact that nothing can be done until 2012 is comforting. I feel like if it has that long to sink in, a lot of people will have forgotten about it by then. And who knows, a lot of dominoes can fall in three years...
On that score this video is pretty encouraging. The Majority Leader of the Iowa Senate talks about why he's not going to co-sponsor a leadership bill with the Minority Leader. The line at the end is really inspiring rhetoric and is pretty much exactly the kind of message that progressive leaders should be sending about gay marriage:
"As a matter of fact, last Friday night, I hugged my wife. You know Ive been married for 37 years. I hugged my wife. I felt like our love was just a little more meaningful last Friday night because thousands of other Iowa citizens could hug each other and have the state recognize their love for each other. No, Senator McKinley, I will not co-sponsor a leadership bill with you."
I read that opponents really don't have a lot of options because none of them were parties in the lawsuit, and the Polk county attorney won't press for a rehearing, so...
