That's a component of the Gilchrist principle. When people don't come around for awhile, the last thing they need to hear when they do come back is, "Where the hell have you been, you've left us all hanging." It's better all the way around if you can manage to stop at, "Hey, it's been awhile and I'm happy to see you." Better for you, better for them and better the odds that you'll get to see them more. Unless of course you really have issues that make you think it's better to be an ass and try to run them off again.
