So, a few weeks ago, I started to watch the Umineko anime. And got addicted. And got frustrated that it made no sense. Other folks in the fandom said that the visual novels made more sense. So I got them! And got addicted. C'est la vie.
They were at the same time right and wrong. It does make a lot more sense than the anime, and is better in terms of emotional depth and creepiness as well. But it introduces new and exiting ways of non-sense-making in the amazing leaps of logic that are in nearly every scene. It really is like a guide to winning an argument with fucked-up logic. It has 'devil's proof'! Schrodinger's Cat! Hempel's Raven! That said, the logic acrobatics are pretty fun to watch, even if it is frustrating that they make no fucking sense.
But the real reason to love these games is the characters. Because they're so long (about 10 or 12 hours each, I think) there's a lot of time to go in depth with character development. The writers makes sure to give you a reason to love or at least understand nearly all of the characters. And then he kills them horribly, but that's beside the point.
By far the character I am most in love with is Beatrice, the crazy witch lady. She's by far the most multi-faceted character in the series, aside fro appealing to my love of crazy evil ladies. She's cruel and sadistic, with a femdom streak a mile long, and yet also incredibly childish and selfish, like a spoiled little girl playing incredibly cruel games with her dolls. And if Beato is a little girl, the Battler, our aptly named hero, is the little boy she drags around and forces to attend her tea parties. Their crazy logic games are a very fun part of the series, as are the moments where they seem to realize each other's true natures. Also any and all moments where Beato is the dere part of tsundere.
So, if you like the anime, but are frustrated by the fact it makes no fucking sense, then get the Umineko games, because they also make no fucking sense. Also if you haven't seen either, go watch the anime, it has murder!
