Reflecting further on my problematic interview last Friday, I am probably imposing a load of unhappiness on myself because I'm not good at pretending I'm something I'm not. It seems to me that the interview was appropriate for a mid-level or junior system administrator or a really technically focused senior sysadmin, somebody you expect to have

True, and haven't you worked for enough bosses that said one thing and acted a completely different way?
