Dug up while looking at real estate:

  • That no-man's land area between Downtown and Oakland that we could never figure out what it was called....is apparently two neighborhoods. The area around the lower hill, near the Mellon Arena is Crawford-Roberts, while the neighborhood along the cliff that Fifth/Forbes runs through is called the Bluffs. ( Read more... )

i always figured they called it west oakland because they didnt want to say that the hospitals were in the hill. when i lived there, i went to school in the hill district

My place at the corner of Bryn Mawr and Centre had a sign outside (on the street sign) which said North Oakland. About 150' up the street (either street) the signs read "Hill District"
