It's all archway's fault. While she's always supported my efforts, she never really grokked why (or how) I did it. So I started stream-of-conciousness at her on the phone... I have no idea how long I was at it. When I'd finished she told me I had to write it down.
Makes me wish I'd been on LJ when I did the walk back in 2000. That's how Joe and I started dating; he kept me company on training walks.
I don't recall us having rain. We had 100 degrees that first weekend of May, and early sweeps at the request of the county health department. Despite being a faster walker than most 6' tall men I was also last out of the gate in the morning and got swept that first day - I'd been doing things like walking back down hard hills to accompany others up. There were supposed to be a couple more hours left to the route, but no dice. In an effort to prove I wasn't spent I helped pack up the pit stop.
The next day those of us who didn't want to be swept made sure to warn others when pit stops were sweeping. It was amusing - I'd learned at one because it was the guy from the prior day who knew how I felt about finishing - "okay, you've got 1.5 minutes to hit the portalet and go - we're out of water anyway
