Not that it makes it any better, but it isn't just America that does this. My mom's ex-husband's family [pure German lineage] have a collection of heirloom blood diamonds dating from before the 1940s.

Diamonds are not even that rare, their status has been elevated because there are tons of them stockpiled in safes, to make them a 'rare commodity'.

Precisely the reason I would want a moissanite for an engagement ring - very close in properties to a diamond, and most definitely conflict free.
