when I was working more with my hands and wearing gloves a lot I got a plain stainless steel band to replace my set for maybe $20 on amazon and it held up quite well. Maybe somebody who knows more about jewelry than I do can weigh in but I wouldn't do a prong set stone in stainless.
My husband got one as he is a baker and he did his research and found it's a really high quality and highly durable ring for people who work with their hands a lot, so it may be a good idea for you, being that your hands end up being knocked around a bit.
After my husband lost his wedding band (grr) I replaced it with stainless steel because it's super cheap, and if he's going to be losing them, he's getting cheap. He's only had it since January, but it has held up fine.
I also have a friend who was a waitress (so, she used her hands a lot at work) who has had a stainless steel wedding band/ering for...five years? And hers have held up in that time.
That said, like the person above me said Tungsten (and titanium) are virtually indestructible. I have titanium, and my husband had Tungsten before he lost it. However, I've never seen stones set in them and I'm not sure it's possible.
My husband works on cars a lot, works out in the yard and plays guitar. He is super hard on his hands, but his tungsten carbide ring is just as nice as it was when we got married 4 years ago. :)

He likes it though! Sorry I don't have more to offer.
Just be careful; bleach will rust stainless steel.

How does it hold up to bumps/dings?
