Sometimes I really dislike how, in this silly world, when in a group of people, you always have to be knowledgeable about modern media culture to be able to have a conversation. Haha, sounds familiar. I also have this problem when people talk about advertisements etc. They always assume others watch TV. Seriously, why isn't the world using torrent already? Can't imagine being a slave to some TV's schedule, and abused by its advertising.

Thing is though, eventually, "old" becomes cool and new becomes "crap". Thus, you can endlessly talk about 80s shows and movies and scorn discussion of Survivor.

I read once that whilst Americans on average don't have great geographical, mathematical or other knowledge (compared to the other countries in the study), their knowledge of pop culture was extremely high. Makes sense. If you had a choice between steak, lollies and other yummy foods versus highly nutritional/healthy foods that taste like cardboard and are hard to chew, you'd eventually go with the easy choice.
