Just politely remind them that, in America, ethnocentrism is so 20th century.

Yet, unfortunately, this sounds like so many of the things I experienced when I was in the US.
"You have CARS in Norway?"
"Norway is the capital of Sweden, right?"
People who speak incredibly slowly and loudly when they here you are "a foreigner."
... I won't go on. It happens everywhere, and it sucks! I WISH ethnocentrism were so 20th century, but that isn't quite what reality is like -- here or there!

You're right. People from other parts of the US have asked me what Oregon is like; not really understanding that yes, Oregon has suburbs and malls and electricity just like everywhere else. ;)

Let's do dinner! We can call Billy and be silly or you can rant about annoying people who pick on America. Let's do it soon though. I can any day this week, I think. Please. I won't pick on Americans AT ALL, I swear.

OK? Text me! I don't want your time here to suck because people have to be "cool" all the time. I got so much of this shit when I was in the US (about other things, of course, but the idea is the same. and it hurts!). So let's talk and just have a good time, ok? Pretty please?? :-D

Hehe. No need to rant on you, my poor roommate got most of it yesterday! She hugged me and told me she loved America. Maybe she was lying, but I appreciated the sentiment. I think yesterday was one of those days that was destined to be bad no matter what happened. There was just no avoiding it (I was due a bad day anyways).

SMS me today/tonight when your free for dinner. Mexican sounds great.

No worries hon, rant all you want. I can totally see how that would be obnoxious. And believe me, if you were having a crappy day like that back home, you'd so have an instant backrub. :p

don't worry sis they are all just jealous because they get no say in how their government is run. and as far as the British instructor, it sounds like she is still bent about the whole tea party thing.
