A Southerner's ReporthmtanpuSeptember 19 2008, 06:29:21 UTC
While I don't live in New Orleans, I live close enough to say that the storm did effect pretty much the entire southern region of the US. It tore into Texas pretty bad, and gas prices are at an all-time high now, thanks to them having shut a refinery down prior to the storm for evacuation purposes.
Sadly, it's cheaper to smoke than it is to drive your car now. Cigarettes are about $3.50/pk (for the "name brands"), whereas gasoline is anywhere from $4.19 to $4.50/gallon right now. 12pk Coca-Colas range from $4 to $6. A gallon of whole milk runs about $5. Bread has even gone to $1.60 for the store-brand.
So, I wouldn't say everything went without damage. It's just necessarily so much storm damage as it is political and economic damage caused by greedy money hounds taking advantage of the situation. If things keep up, we may just become your neighbor...
