She says she'll consider taking me back after I take a series of quizzes and write a comparative essay.

If you've avoided the Harry Potter cult on principle, I say stick to it. Not enough people 'just say no'. That's why our prisons are over crowded. ;)

Don't feel bad. I've never read any of them either - and while I have seen a couple of the movies, I didn't pay for or see them of my own impetus. It is OK to not like what's trendy.
