Long live the King

He has lived long enough to see those words become a curse. At once, it had been a challenge to Morgana and her sister; a promise to the kingdom that her King still lived, a promise to him that his soldiers were still loyal. It became a secret mantra among the people, a reason for hope when so much had been lost.

The King lives…long live the King…

They wait for the House of Pendragon to return like a storm; for Arthur to lead and Uther to rebuild. The people cling to hope like Uther has embraced his hatred for twenty years. It has keep him warm, and in so many ways sane as he’s done unthinkable things in the name of justice and peace. He has kept his people safe and in turn, they have repaid his brutality with loyalty. Even love, after a fashion.

Perhaps that is what makes this hurt as much as it does; after Morgan sets the archers after the helpless. Even as he failed them, and continued to disappoint them: be it with Tom’s death, or Catrina’s vie for the crown, or the Dragon’s release…

They still clung to him. Still hoped, despite it all, as if he could somehow be the man they remembered. Even if he had never been…but he must have, right? Once?

Long live the King

It’s a challenge, a demand…to him as well the sisters…

And he doesn’t know if he can rise to it as he once did.
