Blaine, Kurt finds out, is totally hopeless in the event of a zombie apocalypse. While he was perfect leader material in normal situations, Blaine completely fails at having any skills to help him survive an apocalypse. This is how Kurt ends up with the role of zombie killer, despite popular opinion that he’d be the first one killed.

His boyfriend isn’t a complete loss, though. Blaine scrounges for coveralls that protect Kurt’s Dalton uniform and saves kittens from trees as Kurt keeps the zombies at bay with his hastily made flamethrower and the sai swords he found in a pawn shop on Third and East. If he’s going to be completely honest, Kurt feels pretty badass. He kind of wishes New Directions could see him now - Puck would especially appreciate his newfound badassness.

After they arm themselves (he gave Blaine the last gun he could find and a titanium bat when they were at the pawnshop), they develop a system for finding other people. Kurt does the killing and Blaine skirts around him to look for survivors. Sometimes they actually find people, though more often than not they’ve been bitten and beg to be put out of their misery before the affliction takes them. Somehow, that’s the only part of the apocalypse Kurt can’t handle: mercy killings.

Blaine handles the situations with a stony disposition, as if he completely turns himself off to put the tip of his gun to the infected person's head and pull the trigger. Kurt never watches but he does rub Blaine’s back as his boyfriend dry heaves afterwards. Neither of them believe in a higher power but both wish they did.

Even when all of the other cats run away when Blaine rescues them, one little kitten sticks around. They find her in a stand-off between a fat zombie looking for a snack and a brick wall, spitting and hissing at the undead pile of flesh. For her size, she does pretty well against the zombie. The zombie gives the kitten a bewildered look just long enough for Kurt to shove the tip of his sai sword through its cranium.

Blaine names her Muffin.

Muffin turns out to be a brilliant addition to their apocalypse family. She senses zombies before they appear and claws her way up to the shoulder of Blaine's blazer, hissing at them while Kurt toasts them before they can get too close. When the zombies are dead, Blaine gives her some cat treats that they found at an abandoned vet's office, and Kurt gives Blaine a kiss that properly expresses how glad he is that they’re alive.

They stop for lunch in a corner cafe that was boarded up when the city was trying to originally evacuate. The merchandise is mostly untouched and they heat up some tea to go with their biscotti and slightly stale cookies. Afterwards, they put Muffin down for a nap in the backpack they’d purloined for their ammo and make love in the backroom like it’s the last time they’ll get a chance to.

End of the world sex is just like normal sex only more urgent and dangerous. When they’re safe, they take it slow. Kurt pushes into Blaine and draws out their orgasms. Their lips never leave each other and when they get up, their mouths are swollen and reality doesn’t hurt so much. When they can’t find a safe building, Blaine pulls him up to the roof of a building and fucks Kurt on the edge of it until they nearly fall over to their death.

Now, with the biscotti eaten and their tea turning tepid in the Styrofoam cups they managed to scrounge, they lay on the cool tile and watch the dust motes float past the lone window above them. Muffin has woken from her nap and is playing with a crumpled up paper ball in the corner. If zombies get near, she’ll warn them.

“We haven’t seen anyone who's still human in a while,” Blaine says. Kurt can hear the silent, I don’t want to find more infected. “We should head out of the city.”

It’s a good idea. They can’t stay in Dainty forever. There are too many zombies and not enough survivors to fight. “The roads are blocked, though. We’d have to walk and there’s no shelter on the way to Harvey’s Cleft.”

“There might be a car on the road we can hotwire. Or we could take bikes.”

Kurt grins and places a soft kiss on Blaine’s lips. “I knew that getting you the Zombie Survival Guide was a good idea.”

They sleep in the cafe for the night and comb the surrounding area for supplies before leaving. Blaine finds a motorcycle that's tipped over on their last sweep of the street and, deciding that conserving their energy in the event that they need to run is more important than keeping quiet, they decide that they’ll make their escape on that.

Blaine guns the bike and they speed out of the city just as the zombie hordes are closing in on them. Kurt keeps one hand on the rifle’s trigger and the other firmly wrapped around Blaine’s body. None of the zombies are particularly fast but they come from all sides. He manages to slow down the ones who get near but never gets a decent head shot.

Muffin stays locked up safe in Blaine’s bag.

They make good time on the bike and once they’re on open road, there aren’t many zombie sightings. A few stragglers watch them pass but continue to feast on the smorgasbord of human carrion laying on the pavement. Kurt tries not to think of the intelligence that kind of decision needs.

The make it to Harvey’s Cleft just as the bell of the nearby church strikes twelve. On the side of the building, painted in big black letters, is the word MARKET. He pats Blaine’s shoulder and points to the human-made sign.

They search for the nearest grocery store.
