Mispronunctiation in Providence.

I wish that Providence area RIPTA bus drivers would all learn to pronounce the name of one of Providence's major streets when they make on-board announcements. It's Westminster Street, not "Westminister" Street. There is no i after the n. Yet almost nobody who drives a bus on it every day pronounces it correctly ( Read more... )

I love looking at those old post cards and comparing them to what it looks like now.

It's a local pronunciation, very common. Everyone does it, not just the bus drivers. I don't know why. My family's English, and it grates on me, but I don't think there's anything to be done about it.

Ugh. Like "Green-witch" and "War-wick"... instead of the correct "Grennich" and "Warrick"

But I have honestly never heard that mispronunciation of Westminster.
