i know what you mean. i especially hate that since the band has kind of been incorporated into a fandom with relatively few women, that attitude is even more detrimental, and it sucks enough to think things like that in general! it's incredibly disappointing, and it's really hard for me to not let things like that influence how i feel about a person/band in the big picture.

Especially a fandom whose fanbase appears to be not only dominantly female, but also so stubborn and sexist when a woman is introduced into the Boys' Club. It's honestly one of the reasons I got out of this fandom and stopped following everyone just because they were connected and branched out into new groups.
"It's not like we're prudes, or that we're unsexy in the way we dress or we act, but it's about femininity and not over-sexualisation. We like to dress like girls do, not like whores do
( ... )
whether or not she was misquoted, the word "whore" was still used more than once and that's the most problematic part of this for me, personally, and i think many others too. a whore is not a sex object for men, a whore is, by definition, a prostitute or a person who is paid money in exchange for sexual acts, and generally this does NOT happen because the woman (in most cases, though there are obviously male prostitutes) wants to feel sexy. prostitution is usually forced in situations of extreme poverty or when underlying issues are present, like drug addiction. no matter her message, calling a woman a "whore" because she wears a certain kind of clothing is, without a doubt, detrimental to the celebration of sexuality.
i don't think there's any question that she and the band are sexual, but beyond the offensiveness of her word choice, the statement is basically saying that women who aren't feminine in their sexuality are wrong in being sexual. that doesn't make any sense, and isn't fair, because not all women are feminine. and i
( ... )
Would it have been better if she said "prostitute"? I know there is the connotation of the word "whore", that is thrown as insults towards women. But the definition of a whore...is what you just said. A prostitute. And I think that is what Z was saying
( ... )
i get what you're saying about definitions, and maybe my points were moot in that regard, but i really don't see how calling another woman a whore, for any reason other than to describe that she has sex for money (in which case it would be better to say prostitute, imo), is not derogatory, sexist, and rude. i know she didn't say that gaga is a whore, but that she dresses like a whore - to me, this doesn't make a difference. if someone says "you dress like a slut" and "you are a slut" to anyone i would be equally offended, because the use of the word to bring shame to another woman is the core of the problem. language matters, and even though i disagree with her sentiment in general, if she had used terms that were less offensive or worded herself in a more eloquent way, this probably wouldn't have bothered me at all.
I totally back this 100% This is probably the best "write up" of The Like I've ever read. It's Z bluntly saying what they've been saying in politicly correct terms for years.
Z's quote uncensored and put in to built points for extra impact "It's so rare for anyone to talk about our music. People are always apt to talk about • what we look like • who we've dated • who we're related to • or just the general fact that we're girls instead of talking about what the record sounds like It's frustrating. But every time I play a show, remember why I don't give a fuck, that's what makes me happy and makes it all worth it."
that's been discussed pretty extensively in the comments, and the idea seems to be that no matter her intention with the word whore, it's still problematic because she's projecting her own idea of what kind of sexuality is "right" onto everyone else, which isn't fair
I still don't see how being a whore/prostitute is a certain kind of sexuality. As you said in one of your comments, most women don't get into prostitution because they want to feel sexy. I see it as an exploitation and horrible spot for a woman to be put into.
And I guess stating an opinion is projecting a belief onto everyone else? Then I don't think its fair that you are projecting your idea of what Z really meant onto everyone else.
That wasn't real and a terrible way to express what I think about what your wrote. But I think it is along the same vein of what you said. And I'm tired. And I do value yours and have thought about what you and hector_rashbaum have written in your comments.
