i both love and hate, but mostly love, the frenzied search for a cheap hotel room

based on the hour or so i have spent looking for hotel rooms for zombiecon this year, i am getting the impression that atlanta is the new new orleans, as far as my convention experience will go, which is to say HOT and EXPENSIVE (potentially SHOOTY if i choose to make it not expensive). or like $600 for 3 nights, not counting any and all plane ( Read more... )

I've already spent $700 on just GETTING to my brother's wedding tawdryjones July 7 2006, 13:44:51 UTC
I've stayed in Atlanta twice for conventions. It's more spread out than San Diego and not at all walkable like D.C.

Prepare to spend a LOT of dough on cab rides.

u to the g to the triple h! i think i hate this convention a little more every year. is it really necessary that any city be suddenly clogged with 30k neuroscientists or that i gotta pay through the nose to join them? believe it or not, most are even *less cool* than i am.

you are a trooper with this whole brother's wedding business. it may be worth the added expense to look into some valium for that trip.

dude but they have a trader vic's in hotlanta. you have to go. they have gigantic bowls of horrible tasting lighter fluid with a tiny dash of juice that you share with 4-6 (cough2cough) other people, each drinking out of gigantic, long straws. alternatively, you could get a drink that you drink out of a whole, hollowed-out pineapple. yeah, you need to go.

waah i will not even be able to afford lighter fluid when i get there, let alone a hollowed out pineapple filled with it.

Pssh ... and here I thought it was an actual Zombiecon. I retract my intial "interest is piqued" noise.

I don't like Atlanta either.

Your grant doesn't pay for conference expenses? Damn, I would have stormed out in a huff years ago. Atlanta sucks anyway; don't go.

p.s. I didn't make it to DC last month, so I suppose I can forgive you for not responding to my email. But, it turns out my own zombiecon is Oct 30-Nov 3 in filthadelphia, so maybe I'll see you then.

well, they used to, but its hard to apply for travel grants from 800 miles away.

i felt like an asshole about a week ago when i realized that june came and went without me writing to you, but i figured you accept me as i am and would call if you were in the area. on the bright side, at least one of us doesn't have to worry about paying for a hotel room for some stupid conference in october. i wish i knew someone in atlanta. we have so many bars to show you.
