what exactly are you having done? I don't know much about foot surgeries, but I know some good texts to look at for more info. Good luck with this.

Well, what they'd most likely do is a cheilectomy on the big toe MPJ and a decompression osteotomy (he didn't specify the procedure more than this) on the first metatarsal.

What I have is hallux limitus, essentially arthritis of the big toe MPJ.

I'm particularly nervous about the cheilectomy because it involves cutting away the bone spurs, *and* then another 1/3 to 1/2 of the joint surface, in order to free the joint. Losing that much of the joint just does not sound like a good idea to me. I want to see if he intends to take a more moderate approach to this though because with the osteotomy, it shouldn't be necessary to cut so much joint in order to get joint space back...

I was trying to look this up for you, but I cannot find any good information in our data bases....i gotta run a few errands and then Ill come back to the library latter. Apparently foot surgery and OA of the MC joint is not a hot topic in our databases...

If you need health insurance we can totally go to Massachusetts and get married. However, it shall never be consumated.

i had at least one yoga teacher who talked a good deal about how quadripeds are less likely to get the nasty joint/arthritis problems that humans do. this teacher also explained how our own shoulder and hip joints are more stable (kinda fit together better) when we're on all fours. so, anyway, i think the quadripeds' lack of vertical evolution may be benefiting their joints (and toes?).
too early to write more...

Yeah... I mean, quadrupeds that have evolved for running have nice strong synergies along the spine, and I guess that distributing the weight more evenly across four limbs would lessen the impact on each joint... and they also don't seem to have as much range of motion in their paws. Based on my purely unscientific looking at a dog's foot the other day.

Awww, I miss yoga.....

what are you doing awake at 6 am?
