On CNN this morning they had...um...the Chicago Tribune guy who's on the McLaughlin Group, and he basically said that responding to an attack by the liberal NYT is a way of rallying conservatives who were more or less tepid about McCain's nomination and less likely to support him. Kind of like nationalism within the Republican party. Makes sense to me.
