In Sickness and in Health (16/?)

Jun 21, 2010 21:19

Author’s note: Just a note to say, I know next to nothing of police procedure having never been on the receiving end of it so all you're going to see in the next few chapters is what I remember from tv which has been occasionally tweaked to fit with the story. In other words, I don't have a clue what I'm writing about;) Hopefully it is plausible though. It also occurred to me that I might want to start putting the summaries on the chapters I post on my journal in case people stumble across it and think what the hell is this strange person writing about?

Summary: Ianto looks after everyone, but who looks after him?

Pairing: Janto

Spoilers: None

Warning: Occasional language, references to child abuse

Rating: 15

Jack was startled from his musings by his phone ringing.

“Ianto?”

“Jack! I...I...I didn’t mean to...I couldn’t....he was there and....”

“Okay, calm down. Are you at home?”

A choked sob, “yes.”

“Okay, I’m gonna come over and we can sort everything out, okay?”

“’Kay...hurry...please?”

“I’m coming just hold on,” said Jack soothingly before hanging up and grabbing his coat. Luckily, the others had gone home half an hour earlier so there were no awkward questions as he got in the SUV and sped all the way to Ianto’s.

Once there, he jumped out of the SUV and ran into the building. As he climbed the stairs, he saw Ianto’s dad laying unconscious on the landing, blood trickling from the back of his head. Glancing up, he saw Ianto sitting at the top of the adjoining staircase, arms wrapped round his knees, tears trailing down his ashen face in complete shock.

“Ianto, what happened?” asked Jack softly as he crouched down to check the bastard’s pulse. It was weak but stable.

“Ianto,” asked Jack again, looking up at the distraught man.

“I...I don’t know, I just....it all happened so fast,” stammered Ianto, running a shaky hand through his tousled hair.

“Right. Okay, don’t worry about it. Have you called an ambulance?”asked Jack straightening up.

“Oh God...I didn’t think....”

“Okay, I’ll do it,” said Jack as he fumbled for his phone.

“Hello? Yes, ambulance please. Yeah, erm...male, late fifties, head injury....I don’t know...I just found him. Yes....erm...bleeding, pulse slow but stable, breathing shallow, okay, thank you,” said Jack as he hung up.

“They’ll be here as soon as they can,” said Jack gently as he climbed up the stairs to sit beside Ianto.

The Welshman just nodded before resting his forehead on his knees, “I..I’m so sorry,” he mumbled.

“Hey, none of that; none of this is your fault,” said Jack firmly, his hand lightly trailing up Ianto’s trembling back to rest on his shoulder, stroking it gently.

“Oh God...what am I gonna tell Rhi? I...I..”

“Shh, it’ll all be okay, trust me,” murmured Jack, pulling him close, making sure his face was turned away from the monster below as he pressed soft kisses to the dark curls.

“Are you the people who called the ambulance?” asked a tall police officer some time later as he came towards them, pulling Jack’s attention away from the now passive man and back to the present.

“Err...yeah,” said Jack as he glanced down at where the paramedics were assembling the bastard on a stretcher.

“I see, and were you here too?” asked the police officer, addressing Ianto who nodded, his gaze never leaving the scene below.

“Okay, I’m going to have to take a statement from each of you individually; who’s first?”

“I will,” said Jack knowing Ianto wasn’t in a position to do so. He gently squeezed Ianto’s shoulder reassuringly before following the police officer to a quieter corner.

“Can you make this quick? It’s just my partner is really upset,” said Jack, indicating to Ianto who was sitting with his back to them, his head resting against the banisters.

“I will be as quick as I can, Sir. Now can I take your name and address for our records please?”

“Jack Harkness I live...here,” said Jack, gesturing to Ianto’s flat.

“I see. Can you tell me what happened?”

Jack ran a hand through his hair, “I don’t know, I just arrived here and he was like that.”

“I see. Tell me Mr Harkness, do you know the man?”

Jack hesitated for a moment, wondering how best to play this without dropping Ianto in more trouble. “Yes,” he said finally.

“How?”

“He’s...my partner’s father,” said Jack uncomfortably, knowing he was dropping Ianto in it but praying he could use their abusive relationship to protect Ianto and get rid of the bastard once and for all. He just didn’t like risking Ianto’s freedom to do so.

“I see and was your partner here when you arrived?”

Jack closed his eyes, “yes.”

“And how did he seem?”

“I don’t know; upset, in shock.”

“Do you think your partner attacked his father?”

“I...I don’t know. All I know is that he and his father do not get on. The father is an abusive and violent drunk who has attacked Ianto more than once both verbally and physically. Whilst I don’t know the exact details, I do know that the father is not completely innocent,” said Jack firmly.

The policeman nodded, “thank you, Mr Harkness; we’ll contact you should the need arise,” he said as he started to walk over to Ianto but Jack stood in front of him.

“Do you have to interview him? He’s in shock and upset; he won’t make a reliable witness.”

“We have to collect the evidence, Mr Harkness now if you wouldn’t mind...” said the policeman, trying to move round the Immortal.

“Please, surely it can wait one day,” implored Jack softly.

“We have to do our jobs, Mr Harkness, now if you wouldn’t mind...” said the policeman pointedly.

“At least let me fetch him; he’ll respond better to me,” said Jack. The policeman nodded and Jack walked carefully over to Ianto who was staring blankly at the scene below.

“Ianto,” murmured Jack as he sat down beside him and gently stroked his hair back, “Ianto, look at me,” murmured Jack softly, keeping his tone calm and in control as he gently turned the younger man’s head chin to face him, keeping his expression neutral when he noticed the rapidly developing bruising marring Ianto’s pale throat.

“Ianto, listen to me, the police want to talk to you; you have to tell them everything,” said Jack, his thumb gently caressing the young man’s cheek.

Ianto shook his head, “I can’t,” he whispered barely audibly.

“You have to, Sweetheart, or I can’t protect you,” murmured Jack, resting his forehead against the younger man’s. He felt Ianto tremble against him as he sought more contact and buried his face in the crook of Jack’s neck like a child seeking comfort.

“Please, Ianto; do it for me,” murmured Jack, softly pressing a kiss to the tousled hair. He felt Ianto tremble once more before giving the briefest of nods and pulling away.

“Good luck,” murmured Jack, stroking his arm gently as Ianto stood and went over to where the policeman was waiting.

“Good afternoon, Sir. Now can I take your name and address for our records?” asked the policeman civilly.

“I-Ianto Jones. I-I live here,” stammered Ianto, indicating to his flat.

“With Mr Harkness?” Ianto nodded shakily.

“Okay, now can you tell me what happened?”

Ianto’s breath was coming in short bursts as he fought to compose himself, “I-I don’t know! I...he...”

“Okay, calm down, Sir, just tell me, did you push Mr Lloyd down the stairs?” Ianto nodded as tears slipped down his cheeks.

The policeman nodded, “I see. I’m afraid we’re going to have to take you down to the station so we can ask you some more questions,” Ianto nodded as he followed the policeman back towards the stairs.

“What’s going on?” asked Jack, jumping to his feet as the two men approached.

“We’re taking Mr Jones down to the station, now if you wouldn’t mind,” said the policeman, making to move around the Immortal.

“Wait! You can’t do that, he’s upset; taking him to the station will only upset him further.”

“I appreciate that, but the sooner we’ve established what happened, the sooner he can come back to you,” said the police officer firmly as he walked past, Ianto following meekly behind but Jack caught his arm.

“I’ll wait for you here okay?” Ianto nodded before walking away.

Jack watched them go before calling Owen.

“What?”

“Owen, I need you to call Tosh and Gwen to meet me in the Hub ASAP. There’s bee another incident with Ianto’s father and Ianto could be in serious trouble.”

“Shit! What sort of incident?”

“I’ll tell you when you get there,” said Jack, hanging up as he sprinted down the stairs, past the police officers and to the SUV where he sped all the way to the Hub where he waited impatiently for the others to arrive.

“What’s going on? Owen said it had something to do with Ianto and his dad?” asked Gwen as she came in followed by Owen and Tosh who all took their places at the table.

Jack sighed, “you could say that; it seems I wasn’t persuasive enough when I kicked Mr Lloyd out of the Tourist Office earlier. He then went to Ianto’s where he tried to attack him again.”

“Did he succeed?” asked Tosh in concern.

Jack exhaled, “partially. Ianto pushed him down the stairs before it went too far.”

“Oh.”

“Exactly. Which is why I’ve called you lot here; we’re Ianto’s defence.”

“Hang on, we can destroy aliens and cover up huge apocalypses but we can’t call in a favour with the local coppers?” asked Owen incredulously, leaning forward in his chair.

Jack smiled, this was why he’d hired him, “oh we can, believe me we can, but we won’t. We are gonna use every legal resource available to protect Ianto and send that bastard to jail. So we won’t ‘accidentally’ let Janet out and we won’t ‘accidentally’ push him into the Rift because that would be letting him off. He is going to be properly trialled and sentenced by UK law as the evil man he is.”

Owen nodded, “what do you want us to do?”

“I want you to write up a report of the examination you did this morning outlining all of Ianto’s injuries and what you think caused them and why. I then want you to go through Ianto’s medical records and find anything else that might point towards child abuse and I want them on my desk within the hour.”

“Got it,” said Owen as he left the room.

“Tosh, I want the CCTV from this morning with sound. I then want you to go over to Ianto’s flat and find all the evidence that supports our theory. Pull rank and kick all the police officers out. I want your report on my desk within the hour.” Tosh nodded and left the room.

“Gwen, I want a report on my desk within the hour showing me everything there is to know about Mr Lloyd, I want it to include things like convictions, jobs and anything to do with his drinking. I want it to be so thorough that I know what he had for breakfast this morning, got it?”

Gwen nodded, “what about you?”

“I’m gonna keep an eye on what the police are doing and I’m gonna write a statement on what happened the other day along with character references and my impression of Mr Lloyd, that sort of thing.”

Gwen perched on the table, “do you think it’ll work?”

“It has to.”
