Awesome that you'll be on the West Coast. You must visit SF, for there is an astounding array of incredibly delicious food everywhere.

oooh, i love sf. i was only there once about 7 years ago, but i had a great time. i would love to live there, but it's so expensive and i'm trying to go for a cheap city this time, y'know? i do happen to be a fan of incredibly delicious foods, so a visit would definitely be in order.
how are you liking it there so far? i think andrew told me that you and daniel are living in an apartment with one other roommate, am i right? the pictures you posted before of your place are real nice. that's a great city, so i'm sure you'll love it there.
how was your move cross country? when melissa and i move we're gonna have two lazy cats with us, so hopefully the voyage will go smoothly, as it'll obviously be my first right--->left coast driving expedition...

Daniel, Jacob, and I live in the Mission District. Our rent is $560 each, which is pricey....but only relatively speaking. I feel like I am not spending too much more money out here than I would be in DC (minus the cost of moving and buying furniture). The roughest part has been trying to secure a job! I just started a PT job teaching pipsqueaks the Hebrew language, and I am hoping to get another PT job. I am really loving it here! The first 2 weeks were kind of scary, because this city feels so HUGE and I was not familiar with most of it. Starting the teaching job has been quite helpful, because it is in a totally different part of town, so I am learning the bus routes and walking home from work, taking in the sites (tiny restaurants, cafes, stores, weird random places) I might miss while riding the bus. Each day I feel like I am loving the city more and more. The weather is perfect. At first, I was freezing all of the time - wearing two sweaters, leggings under pants, a head scarf, and gloves - even though it was like 60 ( ... )

lili! thanks for the info re: moving. definitely appreciated. after reading your comments it got me thinking about the prospect of flying to portland shipping our stuff seperately. it really seems like the most reasonable option. all i own are records/cds/books anyway, so all that crap can always be shipped. the idea of driving for 4-5 days with two cranky cats in the car does *not* seem the least bit appealing... if only we could ship them and take our time driving cross country on our own, but for sommmme reason i don't see that working out.
i am quite nervous about the job situation in portland, since i know it's kind of dire right now... but the cost of living is so low i won't feel the need to get a Real Job... who knows...
but congrats to you on the job at the hebrew academy. i read your post about it before, and the fact you're fluent in both russian *and* hebrew is surely quite an asset at such a place. i hope all goes well.
alright, back to work! thanks again for the help.
