9/11

Yesterday was the 10th anniversary of the September 11 atrocity (says Captain Bleeding Obvious). I watched some of the memorial services live, it is crazy to think about where we were 10 years ago and where we are now. But looking back, I remember so very clearly where I was when I found out what had happened and inspired by Xnomads I thought I ( Read more... )

It's funny, (not ha-ha funny, obviously) but I have such a different set of memories for 9/11. Rusty and I had started our 5 week tour of the Middle East the day before. We were at Gallipoli on that day, and no-one really believed it when we were told what had happened. We saw, very briefly, the television footage of the actual crash, but we didn't get the endless days and weeks of gratuitous imagery that most of the Western world got. And we were in a part of the world in which the people were mostly ignorant, and therefore largely unaffected.

Given how upsetting I find the far more restrained amount of footage played for the anniversary, I have to say that I'm glad that I "missed" it, although I feel very selfish for feeling that way.

I hope bin Laden is in the hot place right now.

"Gratuitous."

Wow. So very different. Being here, we weren't bombarded with all the coverage unless we wanted to be and there were times when I wanted to see some of the memorial service that was taking place live. It is still a bit in your face, but nowhere near as much as the initial coverage 10 years ago. Thank God.

This was back when I had sensible sleeping patterns, so I'd gone to sleep around 10PM. The first I knew was waking up to the Triple-J news, with Jen Aldershaw reading the announcment in a breathless sort of voice, as though she was stunned, or had just finished crying. Adam Spencer and Will Anderson didn't engage in any of their usual banter that morning, they just played music. I couldn't believe it, got up and saw all the morning news and just cried.

I was late to work that day - many people were, and there was very, very little work done.
