Help me out...

Dec 06, 2009 09:00

I just finished "Peony In Love" and while I really enjoyed it, think I'm Lisa See-d out (I read "Shanghai Girls," "Snow Flower," and this one in succession). Now I need to find something new to read. I love having a super-good book to look forward to at the end of the day ( Read more... )

Have you ever read Outlander by Diana Gabaldon?

No, is that the series about the Victorian couple where they talk about sex a lot?

18th Century, and they have sex a lot. Better than it sounds, and the hero is supah hot. This series is a favorite.

Also Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos. Also loved the sequel, Belong to Me, but read them in order.

Also The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie King.

OK, everyone is loving the Marisa DLS duo. I think I'll go order "Love."

A Civil Action, Life of Pi (didn't read it yet though), Kite Runner (also didn't read it), the Popes Against the Jews (you might not like this one though; I found it fascinating). Belong to Me was given to me by my MIL but I haven't gotten to it yet. My Year of Meats is supposed to be good as is Operating Instructions. I liked Nickel and Dimed a lot too b/c it was kind of eye opening to me about being poor, but it was short.

Dan reads stuff that I find boring - Midnight's Children, India Unbound, etc.

I shouldn't throw stones - the last book I "read" was Krause's Food & Nutrition Therapy. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. :)

Thanks! I have read Kite Runner (really liked it), Operating Instructions (liked it but it started to make me exhausted halfway through). I tried to read My Year Of Meats and could not get into it. I will check out your other suggestions.

The Help is fantastic. I really liked Love Walked In and Belong To Me by Maria de los Santos. If you liked Kite Runner, read his other book A Thousand Splendid Suns - it is powerful and heartbreaking and hard to put down. Like pocket, I enjoyed Outlander quite a bit and it's easy to drop in and out of the series. Serena by Ron Rash was in my top five last year - spare and Southern historical fiction of an ambitious woman in 1929 Appalachia. Did you read March for book club? Geraldine Brooks is one of my very favorite authors - March, Year of Wonders, People of the Book. It's not feel good stuff, but she is phenomenal at writing historic fiction.

Ahhhh, I was JUST on Amazon and I almost bought The Help (before I read this!). I'll go get it.

FWIW I just ordered used copies of "Truth & Beauty" by Ann Patchett (remembered I was meaning to pick that up for a while now) and "Honolulu" by Alan Brennert (I LOVED "Molokai"--if you guys are looking for a really good engrossing read, that is such a great book).

Oh--and I LOVED "Thousand Splendid Suns." I read that one while I was pregnant...yikes. Some people think Khaled H. is a bit manipulative but I enjoy his writing style.

Did you read The Glass Castle? We read it for book club, and it was wonderful.

I just recently read The Time Traveler's Wife and The Other Boleyn Girl, and I loved them both. But you've probably read those - I'm kind of late to the party when it comes to popular fiction.

Did TTW, but haven't done Other Boleyn Girl. I have also heard about Glass Castle--is that the one where the mother is insane and becomes homeless?

Yeah, both of the parents are pretty out there. It's so interesting, though. They're really quite horrible parents, to the point of neglect. But at the same time, they manage to instill such great values in their kids. It's kind of shocking and depressing at times, but it's really not a downer. I absolutely loved it.

The Glass Castle was really good. I have to catch up on my own reading, I have three or four books to get to & this is making me want to go start one. I think the last really good one was Still Alice. About a woman professor who gets early onset Alzheimer.

I have that one so if you do want to read it let me know cause I could just pop it in the mail to you. I won't read it again and I'm just up in N. Ca.
